Overnight Curls

Last night I decided to take a shower. Since I usually let my hair air dry, but I was ready to hit the bed, I scrunched in some Aveda Be Curly curl enhancer cream, and put my hair into some pin curls to sleep in. Here’s the result:

I divided my hair down the middle and then divided each section into 3 parts. Curling the hair around my fingers from the bottom up I used 2 bobby pins in an X shape to secure each section to my head.

The morning after:

I took the pins out and combed through the ringlets with my fingers.

I have naturally wavy/curly hair so I decided not to use hair spray to set the curl as it will usually hold all day in loose curls.

DIY High-Low Skirt

I was bored and looking at Pinterest today, and decided to follow through on one of my many pinned DIY tutorials.

The high-low skirts are pretty popular right now, and last week while competing at the West Georgia Idol competition there was a girl that wore a really cute maxi-dress version.

I was trying to imagine doing this to any of my skirts in the closet and just couldn’t see it. Then I remembered a skirt I NEVER wear…a white knee-length linen skirt with an extra long elastic top from a line Sarah Jessica Parker put out a few years ago called Bitten. Perfect!

What you need:

Knee-length skirt or maxi dress
Fabric Scissors
Pencil/Chalk/Pastel Stick
Sewing Machine (for optional hem)

There are two layers of linen so I started with the bottom layer. With fabric scissors cut a low “U” shape from side seam to side seam. I took a light colored pastel stick and traced my flared U on the bottom layer and made a cut. Leave about 1” for the hem (if you intend on hemming it.) I tried it on and made some corrections, then traced a flared U on the top layer and made another cut.

I adjusted and lined up the cuts as much as I felt necessary and trimmed excess fabric. I decided not to hem the skirt as it looked fine as it was.

I wasn’t sure how I felt about it until I showed my boyfriend. He said I reminded him of Marilyn Monroe in it, and that he really liked it. Hopefully my girlfriends approve as he never disagrees with more skin showing.

I think it could be a little shorter to be more dramatic. When I do end up hemming it then I can play with the length. Anyways, this was a really easy way to take a boring skirt and alter it into something modern!

DIY Rainbow Chalk Tips

So I found a tutorial on coloring your hair with pastels on my best friend’s Pinterest page last week, and today I decided to try it out.

I happened to find some chalk pastels in my craft tub while looking for paint brushes the other day, and today I swiped some light blue on my hair to see if the color would show…it didn’t. So I grabbed a bright red ran it under water and colored some of my naturally red hair, and BAM! It colored my ends with a very pigmented red color!

So I went a little crazy and picked a royal blue, and turquoise color to go with the red and went to town. I set the colors with a flat iron and some hair spray. I also made sure to take a paper towel, and making a pony tail with my other hand, swept the paper towel down my ends to remove excess chalk.

Voila!

DIY American Flag Shorts

I woke up this morning with an urge to find some American flag shorts for the 4th of July festivities happening this week. After searching the internet for a pair I could buy locally, I decided to look up tutorials instead. I have some plain cut-off shorts that I wear around the house and some pastel dye sticks for fabric so I got creative.

I cut out a stencil from a cereal box, and used masking tape to mark my stripes:

I then started stenciling stars onto the fabric. I had to do about 3 layers to get the white to come across.

Next, I colored in the red stripes. I had to do 2 layers for it to stand out.

After coloring the shorts with the pastel dye sticks, I laid a piece of parchment paper over the shorts and pressed them with an iron to seal the dye. I had to reapply the white and iron lightly again because some of it faded with the first set.

Voila!

Kelley’s auditioning for a band Friday, and they’re coming to him! I love networking in Atlanta!! Google “Summer Dare” to hear some tracks off their EP. Meanwhile, we hit the studio in ATL tmr to finish our EP for Arsenic and Old Lace. Printed out the materials for our press kits tonight, and we give those out to some places in Douglasville tomorrow on the way to ATL. Mike is being amazing and gifting me gas money for the trip. Thank god for adopted grandparents that support your musical career. <3 <3 <3 Meanwhile, we have a gig thursday, Kelley’s audition Friday, and hopefully some tip gigs on the weekend if nothing else. starting the morning off in a CLEAN room, (despite kelley’s corner of laundry…and pants in the middle of the floor) with christmas lights on, pumpkin spiced coffee, a clean living room, and a clean kitchen! 2 job prospectives for the day, and ALONE TIME as the dude takes a run around the lake. now if i could figure out some way to cook breakfast… pinterest time.
